Are You a Giver?

Are You a Giver?

Giving season is here!  You’ve probably heard about Giving Tuesday – the Tuesday after Thanksgiving – which is a day designated for people to donate to their favorite charities.  This year it falls on November 29th and it has become easier than ever to give (more about that later).

Of course, you can give any time, as many people do. In some religious traditions, the concept of tithing is important because it embodies elements of duty and gratitude. People believed that if they did this faithfully and regularly, they would receive blessings.

By giving their 10 percent with each harvest, the people could fulfill their responsibility and maintain a habit of self-sacrifice.  In a sense, it was the way people learned to build giving into their budget.  In the same way, we can give donations to our favorite nonprofit on a regular basis by using the NetGiver App easily and securely to support their services.

Going back to our opening comments, Giving Tuesday is designated to help people focus on the importance of donating to charity before the end of the year.  For some, dropping $120 at once works, but for others giving a small amount such as $10 each month feels more realistic.  It fits into their budget more easily.  The good news is that it’s better for nonprofits – they benefit from a consistent flow of cash and often build their budgets around it.  They spend fewer of their precious resources on fundraising campaigns and more on providing services in the community.

Generous people want to give but a couple of years ago, everything was closed down, and Nonprofits suffered without their community connections and support.  Some of them squeaked by, cutting staff and services, but many had to discontinue operations entirely.  A few found new ways to connect with givers; here is one example:

Spirit of Grace Church in Coon Rapids, MN, offered online giving options for its congregation, but it was clunky and the fees charged to process donations seemed unfair and unnecessarily high.  Some people wrote checks but many liked the convenience of online giving.  When the pandemic forced places of worship to close down, donations dropped off severely and Pastor Tim started to worry about paying salaries, utilities and maintaining their ministry.  A church member heard of NetGiver at his credit union and told Pastor that they don’t charge fees – the entire donation would go straight to the church!  Spirit of Grace now has a secure and easy way for members to give right on their website or via the mobile app.  By implementing this easy and secure Spirit of Grace Church estimates that over 85 percent of its members are regular tithers today.  Plus, they realized a 67 percent reduction in fees charged to process member donations.

Donors give money because they feel empowered by seeing the impact of their dollars, and a recurring donation is a great way to maximize your impact on an organization.  Most Nonprofits need a steady stream of income throughout the year so while Giving Day is a great way to draw attention to the benefits of being charitable, there are 364 other days in the year.  NetGiver is a secure app where you can make a one-time donation or set up a regular giving schedule for all your favorite Nonprofits all in one place.  Then, at tax time, your entire giving record is in one place, ready to download for your file.
